Pierogi
The word ‘pierogi’ comes from the Slavic word for festivity. But these toothsome Polish dumplings are food for feast, fasting and famine. In Roman Catholicism, pierogi filled with vegetables were popular for seasons where the faithful abstained from meat. They even have a patron saint: Hyacinth. Legend tells us that Saint Hyacinth relieved suffering peasants during a famine in the 13th century with pierogi. Wear the pierogi as a reminder of the duality of the human spirit: in deprivation we affirm our abundance.
